London · Guide for brands, agencies and content teams

“Valentine's Day is one colour and one feeling. Get the red right and the rest follows.”

A Valentine's Day campaign shoot has a short life and a hard deadline. In 2027, 14 February falls on a Sunday, which pulls the gifting rush into the week before and the weekend itself. Content has to be shot around Christmas and New Year, approved in January and live by the last week of the month. This guide covers the Valentine's content calendar, how to plan the idea, how to shoot red so it looks rich rather than garish, the gifting product shots that sell, and what to deliver, with a red lip beauty film and burgundy leather as the worked examples.

When to shoot and launch Valentine's content

Valentine's Day is a big moment for gifting, beauty and fashion. Retail Times reported a forecast from the agency Savvy that UK Valentine's spending in 2026 would rise 12% to £1.6bn, with beauty, clothing and flowers among the strongest categories, and almost half of Valentine's shoppers saying they were likely to buy something they saw on social media. That shapes the plan: content needs to be live early, and the last-minute push needs its own assets.

WhenWhat happens
November to early DecemberBrief, idea, palette and moodboard. Book talent, studio and crew around the Christmas break.
December to mid-JanuaryThe shoot. Many teams shoot before Christmas so January is free for the edit.
Mid to late JanuaryEdit, retouching, cut-downs, approvals. Gift guides and product pages built.
Late JanuaryLaunch: gift guides, hero film and the first social posts.
Monday 8 to Saturday 13 February 2027The gifting push, then "still time" and same-day delivery messages.
Sunday 14 February 2027The day. Plans, dinners and last-minute gifts. Content for the moment, not for selling.

If your brand also runs in the Gulf, note that Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, so Valentine's falls in its first week there. Plan a separate, quieter version of the content for those markets; the timing is in the Ramadan and Eid campaign planning guide.

02 · The idea

Decide who the gift is for

Valentine's content works best when it picks one relationship and one moment. A campaign that tries to be for couples, friends and self-gifters at once ends up being for no one.

01

For a partner

The classic: giving, getting ready, the evening out. Intimate, warm, close framing.

02

For friends

Lighter and more playful. Groups, colour, the night in.

03

For yourself

Self-gifting suits beauty and accessories: the ritual, the treat, the result.

04

Life after the 14th

Shoot a version without hearts and props, so the same set feeds spring.

The longer seasonal planning, sets and summer-for-winter tricks are in the Christmas campaign planning guide; Valentine's needs fewer props and more colour discipline.

03 · Red on camera

Red palettes that look rich, not cheap

Waterproof: one red, black knit, grey backdrop. Nothing else in the frame competes with the mouth.

Waterproof is a red lip beauty editorial shot in Dubai, with make-up by Elinaz and hair by Dani. The behind-the-scenes film names the lip as Rouge Dior On Stage Ink, and explains the styling choice: the hair goes flat to the skull, so the mouth is the only bold thing. The film's lines, in French with English subtitles, sell the promise simply: it stays, even in the rain. That is a perfect Valentine's beauty structure: one product, one colour, one claim.

One red, chosen on camera. Reds shift between blue and orange on different sensors and screens. Test the exact shade on the day, on the model's skin, and lock the white balance.

Neutral around it. Black, grey, cream or deep green. Red on red becomes a blur.

Watch the red channel. Saturated red clips before the overall exposure looks bright. Check the RGB histogram and pull back.

Texture in the shadows. A clean lip line and real skin texture keep red looking expensive. See retouching that keeps skin texture.

The red does not have to be a lipstick. In Aspinal of London's film for a woven leather tote, the bag is a deep burgundy, set against dark green, and the model's nails are a matching deep red. Burgundy reads as Valentine's without a single heart, and it keeps working long after February.

The gifting photography a Valentine's campaign needs

"What it holds": a perfume going into the bag. Gift buyers want to picture it in use · Aspinal of London

Someone buying a gift is buying for another person, so the images have to answer their questions quickly: what it looks like close up, how it's used, and how it arrives.

ShotWhat it answers
Product beside the faceFor beauty: what the colour looks like on a real person. Hold it at the same distance as the eyes.
Swatch and textureThe exact shade, on skin, at full screen.
In hand or in useThe size and the moment: a phone case, a perfume, a card going into a bag.
DetailsStitching, hardware, engraving, the finish of the product.
PackagingGift box, ribbon, card. Does it arrive ready to give?
Giving and openingThe emotional beat, best on video for Reels and paid social.

Glass, gloss and metal are where gifting shots go wrong. Plan the reflections before the day; the method is in jewellery photography without reflections. For short product loops and e-commerce sizes, see product video production in London.

A short BTS film from the shoot is worth planning as its own deliverable; see behind the scenes video production for brands. If creators will post the content, agree usage and labelling first, as in influencer campaign video production.

FAQ

Common questions

When should brands shoot Valentine's Day content?

Between December and mid-January, so the edit and approvals are done in January and content can go live in the last week of the month, ahead of the gifting push in early February.

What day is Valentine's Day 2027?

Sunday 14 February 2027. Expect the gifting rush in the week before and over the weekend, with "still time" messaging up to Saturday 13 February.

How do you photograph red products so they look good?

Test the exact shade on camera, lock the white balance, keep the rest of the palette neutral and watch the red channel on the histogram, because saturated red clips before the image looks overexposed.

What content does a Valentine's gifting campaign need?

A hero film, gift guide stills, short product loops, "still time" versions for the final week, behind the scenes clips and a version without Valentine's props that can run into spring.
