Dubai · Guide for beauty brands, agencies and make-up artists
“Don't judge a beauty photographer by their best photo. Judge them by their skin.”
Hiring for a beauty shoot in Dubai comes down to five things: a portfolio that shows real skin, a clear process from brief to delivery, retouching that keeps texture, someone who can handle permits and locations, and usage agreed in writing. Here's what to ask before you book, how to brief, and the warning signs, whether you're a skincare brand, an agency or a make-up artist building a campaign.

Real skin, kept real · Waterproof, Dubai
01 · The portfolio
What to look for in a portfolio
Skin at full size
Ask to see images large. Pores and fine texture should still be there. Plastic, airbrushed skin is a retouching habit you'll pay for.
Your category
Lipstick, skincare, fragrance and jewellery each need different light. Look for work close to your product.
Stills and film
Most campaigns now need both. Check they can deliver video that matches the photographs.
Real projects
Named brands, credited teams and behind-the-scenes footage show the work was really made, not generated.

02 · The questions
Ask these before you book
| Ask | A good answer sounds like |
|---|---|
| How do you plan the shoot? | A moodboard and shot list agreed before the day, with timings |
| Who's on the team? | Named make-up, hair and styling, or help finding them |
| How do you retouch skin? | Clean blemishes, keep texture, no change to what the product does |
| Who handles permits and locations? | A clear plan, through a licensed production company where needed |
| What will we receive, and when? | A list of final images and films, formats and dates |
| What usage is included? | Media, territory and term written into the quote |
03 · The brief
How to brief so the quote is accurate
Product: what we're shooting and how many hero products.
Look: three reference images and one you don't like.
Where it runs: social, website, paid ads, print, billboards.
Dates: shoot date and when you need the finals, especially around Ramadan and Eid.
Budget range: so the plan fits from the start.
For the full brief template, see shooting a commercial. For campaign timing in the region, see planning a Ramadan and Eid shoot.
04 · Warning signs
Red flags
No mention of permits
Commercial shoots in Dubai's public places need a permit. A photographer who brushes this off puts your campaign at risk.
"All rights, forever" for nothing
Or the opposite: no usage terms at all. Either way, you'll find out later.
No releases
Every model and recognisable person needs to have signed. In the UAE, consent is the law.
Only filtered work
If every image looks heavily filtered, ask to see an unretouched frame next to the final.
05 · Example
What a well-run beauty shoot looks like

Waterproof was planned on a shared board with six frames, a team brief for hair and make-up, and a timed running order. It was shot in one day in a Downtown Dubai residence with the location's permission, and delivered as retouched stills and a film colour-matched to the photographs.
That's the standard to expect: a plan before the day, a calm set, and finals that look like real people.

FAQ
Common questions
How do I choose a beauty photographer in Dubai?
Look for real skin texture in the portfolio, work close to your product category, stills and film, a clear plan from brief to delivery, and usage and permits handled properly.
Should one person shoot photos and video?
It can work for small shoots when planned well. For bigger campaigns, a photographer and a filmmaker working side by side gets more from the day.
What should a beauty shoot quote include?
The creative fee, the team, expenses such as studio, permits and kit, the deliverables with dates, and usage: media, territory and term.
How far ahead should I book a Dubai beauty shoot?
Two to four weeks for permits and planning, and longer for Ramadan and Eid campaigns, which are usually shot between December and mid-January.
