Dubai · Guide for fashion brands, designers and agencies

“In fashion the clothes are the story. The photographer's job is to make them move, read and sell.”

Hiring a fashion photographer in Dubai is different from booking a beauty or portrait shoot. A fashion brand needs looks that read piece by piece, fabric that shows its texture, and a set of outputs that run from a lookbook to e-commerce to a short film for social. This guide is for fashion brands and designers planning a shoot in Dubai: the four kinds of fashion shoot, how to brief one, the team you need around the camera, booking models, and where permits come in. The examples are real Dubai productions: Celine Winter '22, L'Officiel Baltic at Palazzo Versace, the Damas gown campaigns and Your Water Form.

01 · The shoot types

Four kinds of fashion shoot, and what each needs

Fashion brands often ask for "a shoot" when they need two or three different things. Name them early, because each changes the light, the set and the schedule.

ShootWhat it's forWhat it needs
LookbookShowing the collection to buyers, press and customers, look by lookConsistent light and framing, full length plus details, a clean or simple set
CampaignSelling the mood of the seasonA location or built set, a concept, hero images with space for copy
E-commerceProduct pages that convertIdentical light every time, front, back, side and detail, fast turnaround
Fashion film and editorialMovement, attitude and social content, or a magazine storyA videographer, music, a sequence of scenes, vertical and horizontal edits

For product pages and short loops, the product video production guide covers the sizes and formats.

02 · Lookbook and film

Celine Winter '22: a whole collection on a small kit

Knee boots and a small Celine bag in motion, from the Celine Winter 22 film Model in a grey Celine sweatshirt and check trousers with a gold chain bag, Celine Winter 22 film

Details and full looks from the same set: boots and bag in motion, then the whole outfit.

The Celine Winter '22 "Dans Paris" film was made in Dubai for Savoir Flair, with photographer Esrasam and make-up by Diana Tin, and filmed by SwainUK. The kit was a Sony FX3 with an 85mm lens, handheld, and two Aputure 300D lights with double diffusion on a clean, pale set. It went out as a short vertical film of under 20 seconds, one look after another: varsity tees, check tailoring, knitwear, knee boots and the bags.

01

Even, soft light

It lights an area, not a mark, so the model can move and every look is lit the same way.

02

A plain set

Pale walls and a few pieces of furniture. Nothing competes with the clothes.

03

Details as their own shots

Bags, chains, tags and shoes are what brands repost. Plan one detail per look.

04

Stills and film share the light

Continuous light lets the photographer and the videographer work the same set-up.

The lighting is broken down in the Celine fashion film case study.

03 · Editorial

L'Officiel Baltic: an editorial film in a working hotel

L'Officiel Baltic at Palazzo Versace Dubai: a window becomes the key light, or the silhouette.

The L'Officiel Baltic film with the model Inès Trocchia was shot at Palazzo Versace Dubai, with make-up by Ido Raphael and hair by Dani Hiswani, as the end credits list. One location gave the film a suite, a colonnade, a lounge with a grand piano and the pool. It ran to one minute in 16:9 with a separate vertical edit. An editorial has no product to hold up, so it is carried by styling, locations and the model's movement.

One idea per room: in the lounge, it's the piano.

For a designer, the lesson is that a hotel or residence can give you a dozen sets under one permission, as long as the looks are grouped by room and the rooms are ordered by light. The full plan is in the L'Officiel Baltic case study, and other location types are in where to shoot fashion and beauty in Dubai.

04 · Campaign

Damas: gowns, palaces and movement

A gold gown on a balustraded terrace: colour, shape and space around the figure.

The Damas campaigns are jewellery campaigns, but they are dressed like fashion shoots: an orange gown in a palace garden, a gold gown on a terrace, lilac, pink and pale blue tulle in gilded rooms. The credits list director Yehia Bedier and production company 1602 Studio. When the clothes are this big, they need room to move. A gown is shot wide enough to see its whole shape, with wind, a walk or a turn to bring the fabric to life, and then close for the detail.

Pale blue tulle against a tapestry: the room is chosen to complement the colour of the look.

Match look to location. Pale tulle in warm gilded rooms, strong colour against white stone and green garden.

Plan the fabric. Steamers, clips and a stylist on set for every take. Tulle and silk crease the moment the model sits.

Move the light, not the model. Outdoor looks in the first and last hours of sun; interiors in the middle of the day.

05 · The brief

How to brief a fashion photographer in Dubai

Model at the pool edge at night with a red lip and pearls, Your Water Form, Dubai

Your Water Form: black knit, pearls, sunglasses and a red lip by the pool, art directed by Philipp Jelenska.

The collection. The number of looks, with a photo of each, and which are heroes.

The outputs. Lookbook, campaign, e-commerce, film: how many images and clips of each, and in which shapes.

The mood. Three references you love and one you don't. Say what you like about each.

The model. Look, sizing for the samples, and whether the images will run in paid ads.

Location. Studio, hotel, residence, desert or street, and who is securing permission.

Usage. Where the images will run, for how long and in which countries.

A good creative team makes the photographer's job possible. Your Water Form, a jewellery editorial by a Dubai pool, had art direction by Philipp Jelenska, make-up by Ido Raphael and hair by Dani, and was shot on a Sony A7 III with an 85mm f/1.8. For a fashion shoot, plan these roles around the camera:

RoleWhy it matters
StylistDresses, pins and steams every look, and decides the order
Hair and make-upBuilds the look and keeps it fresh in the heat between takes
Art director or creative directorHolds the concept and approves hero frames on the day
ProducerBookings, locations, permits and the running order
VideographerThe film and the vertical edits, sharing the set with the photographer

Models. In Dubai, models are usually booked through agencies; the Waterproof beauty editorial, for example, was made for the agency Fashion League UAE. Ask the agency for current digitals, measurements and availability, confirm the usage in the booking, and get a release signed with it (see model release forms for the UK and UAE).

Permits. Shooting in public places, hotels and many venues needs permission and may need a permit. The process is in the Dubai photoshoot permit guide, and if a creator will post the work, check the UAE Advertiser Permit. Between May and September, plan around the heat: shooting in Dubai's summer heat.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I find a fashion photographer in Dubai?

Look for full looks and fabric detail in their portfolio, work for brands in your category, film as well as stills, and a clear plan from brief to delivery, including permits and usage.

What's the difference between a lookbook and a campaign shoot?

A lookbook shows every look clearly and consistently for buyers and customers. A campaign sells the mood of the season with fewer, stronger images, usually on location or a built set.

Do I need a permit for a fashion shoot in Dubai?

Often, yes. Public places, hotels and many venues need permission and may need a filming or photography permit. Check before you book the location.

Should a fashion shoot include video?

For most brands, yes. A short vertical fashion film from the same set gives social content that stills can't, and a videographer can share the photographer's continuous light.
