Shooting the La Beaute Campaign with Reef Neeman in Ras Al Khaimah
SwainUK co-produced a luxury beauty campaign in Ras Al Khaimah for La Beaute, filming Reef Neeman and Yuval Harel. Here is how we made it happen as a solo crew.
Ras Al Khaimah has a particular quality of light that I find myself thinking about long after I have left. It is not the harshness people assume. In the golden hour, the coastline becomes genuinely soft, almost European in its warmth, and for a beauty campaign that needed to feel luxurious without being cold, that light was an asset I planned around from the moment the brief landed.
This project came together through a co-production between SwainUK and Ori Amitai Productions. The campaign was for La Beaute, a beauty brand with a confident visual identity and a roster of talent that matched that confidence. On set we had Reef Neeman, a hugely recognisable face, and the talented Yuval Harel. My role covered cinematography and stills direction, operating as a solo crew with a single assistant. No second camera operator, no dedicated gaffer. Just tight preparation, smart kit choices, and the kind of calm that comes from having done this long enough to know what you actually need.

Preparing for a Solo Crew Shoot in Ras Al Khaimah
Directing established talent is a different skill to directing emerging faces. With someone like Reef Neeman, the foundation is already there. The work is not to build confidence from scratch but to channel what is already present into something that reads on camera the way the brand needs it to. My approach is always to have a conversation before we roll, to understand how a person moves naturally, where their stillness lives, and what they find uncomfortable. That knowledge shapes every frame.
"The best beauty footage I have ever shot came from moments when the talent forgot I was there. My job is to create the conditions for that to happen, then be ready when it does."
Yuval Harel brought a different energy to the shoot, and the interplay between the two made for sequences that had genuine warmth rather than the kind of polished distance that beauty campaigns can sometimes fall into. We worked through each setup methodically, but I always leave room in the schedule for the unscripted moment. On this shoot, some of the strongest frames came from transitions between setups, the in-between seconds when guards drop and something real shows up.
Cinematography Craft: Light, Lenses, and the Ras Al Khaimah Environment
Beauty cinematography lives and dies on skin tones. Every lens choice, every exposure decision, every colour temperature call feeds into how the talent looks and how the product reads alongside them. In Ras Al Khaimah, shooting exteriors, I exposed for the shadows rather than the highlights, preserving detail in skin and letting the background bloom slightly. It gives the image a richness that post-production can build on without having to fight against blown-out skies or crushed faces.
For interior sequences, I used a soft key source positioned high and slightly off-axis, with a bounce opposite to lift the shadows without flattening the face. Beauty lighting is not about eliminating shadows. It is about controlling where they fall and how deep they go. A completely shadowless face reads as flat in motion. A precisely placed shadow gives the face architecture, and architecture gives the viewer something to look at.
The lens selection leaned towards longer focal lengths for the beauty close-ups, compressing the background and giving each frame a density that wide lenses simply cannot replicate at distance. For the wider environmental shots that gave the campaign its sense of place, I pulled back to a more moderate focal length to keep the geometry of the Ras Al Khaimah backdrop honest without distorting it.
Co-Production with Ori Amitai Productions
Good co-productions succeed because of trust and clear communication, not because both parties have overlapping skill sets. Ori Amitai Productions brought deep knowledge of the talent relationships and the brand's visual language. SwainUK brought the cinematography expertise and the on-set direction. That division was clean, and it made the shoot efficient in a way that reflected well on the final deliverables.
Operating across the UK, EU, and UAE is something I do regularly, and the Gulf, from Dubai up the coast to Ras Al Khaimah, has become a market where the demand for high-end beauty content is growing fast. Brands want the cinematic quality associated with European production but with the logistical agility to shoot in the Gulf. That is a gap SwainUK is well placed to fill.
What the Campaign Delivered
La Beaute received a suite of campaign assets that covered both motion and stills from a single unified shoot, maintaining consistency across formats without requiring separate production days. The footage has the warmth and intimacy the brief called for, and the BTS material captured by my assistant tells the story of how it was made in a way that extends the campaign's reach across the brand's own channels.
If you are a brand, creative director, or production company looking for a cinematographer who can operate at this level across international locations, I would be glad to discuss your next project.
