SwainUK Video Portfolio: A Decade of Commercial Cinematography in London
Ten years of commercial cinematography distilled into one portfolio overview. Here is what the SwainUK body of work looks like and how it got built.
Over twelve years of working as a London cinematographer, I have delivered more than 5,000 videos for brands ranging from independent British makers to globally recognised luxury houses. That number does not mean much on its own. What matters is what sits behind it: the creative decisions, the on-set problem-solving, and the discipline of showing up with a clear visual language every single time. This post is a practical tour of the SwainUK commercial reel, with some honest craft notes on why the work looks the way it does.

The film above, made for Aspinal of London, is one of my favourite recent examples of editorial restraint. The Eliza Clutch is a deceptively simple object, so the temptation is to overlight it and throw in unnecessary movement. Instead, I kept the mood close to how the bag actually lives: New Year's Eve shimmer, cool ambient light, and a pace that lets the material breathe. The result is a piece that feels like a magazine still that has come alive, which is exactly what a luxury product film should feel like.
Building a Commercial Reel That Works for Luxury Brands
A showreel is a strange thing to build. The temptation is to pack in every technically impressive shot and every well-known client name. The reality is that the best commercial reels are edited with the same discipline as the films themselves. Creative directors commissioning work do not need to see every project. They need to see whether your eye matches theirs in the first fifteen seconds.
When I put together the SwainUK video portfolio, I organise it around three questions. Does the lighting feel intentional or accidental? Does the camera movement serve the subject or just fill time? And does the edit have a rhythm that a viewer can actually feel? If the answer to any of those is uncertain, the clip does not make the cut, regardless of the brand attached to it.
- Intentional lighting: I work primarily with a mix of hard and diffused sources, shaping light to match the brand's existing visual identity rather than imposing a generic look.
- Motivated movement: Every camera move on a SwainUK production has a reason. A slow push communicates intimacy. A locked-off wide shot communicates confidence. I do not move the camera for the sake of it.
- Editorial rhythm: Cutting to music is not enough. I cut to the emotional beat of the piece, which sometimes means holding a shot three seconds longer than feels comfortable.
"On a shoot for a heritage leather brand, we had one hero product, a single afternoon of winter light coming through north-facing studio windows, and a client who understandably wanted twenty different angles. I suggested we do five. We used the remaining time to perfect each one. The client called it the best product film they had ever commissioned. The restraint was the decision."
Aspinal of London: Refined English Elegance on Camera
Aspinal of London has become one of the strongest threads running through the SwainUK portfolio, and that relationship exists because the brand's visual values and mine are genuinely aligned. They care about craft, material, and longevity, and those are the exact qualities I try to put on screen.

The product films I have made for Aspinal sit in a specific visual register: warm but not indulgent, precise but not clinical. Achieving that balance is partly a lighting question and partly a styling question, but more than anything it is a question of pace. These are not social media scroll-stoppers designed to grab attention in the first half-second. They are films that reward the viewer who stays with them, which reflects exactly how the brand wants to be perceived.
From a technical standpoint, these productions typically involve shooting tethered to allow real-time review, using macro lenses to capture texture and stitching detail, and grading to a colour palette that references the brand's print and packaging identity. The goal is always coherence. A product film should feel like it belongs to the same world as the brand's website, its packaging, and its store environment.

This more recent piece continues that thread. When I watch it back, what stands out is how much of the storytelling happens in the material itself. Good cinematography for luxury products is often about getting out of the way and letting the object speak. The camera's job is to present, not to perform.
What a Decade of London Cinematography Actually Teaches You
Twelve years of commercial production in London, plus work across the EU and UAE, has taught me that the creative fundamentals do not change much. What changes is your confidence in applying them under pressure. Early in my career, I would second-guess a lighting setup if a client seemed uncertain. Now I understand that uncertainty is normal, and the director's job is to hold the creative vision steady while everything else moves around it.
The other thing a decade teaches you is how to listen. The best briefs I have worked from were collaborations, not instructions. A brand knows its customer. A cinematographer knows how to translate that knowledge into something a viewer can feel. When both sides respect that division, the work is better for it.
London specifically has shaped the SwainUK aesthetic in ways I did not fully appreciate until I started working internationally. There is a particular quality to British visual culture, a mix of restraint and warmth, of heritage and contemporary edge, that informs almost everything I make. Whether I am shooting in Mayfair or in a Dubai hotel suite, that sensibility travels with me.
